As in the coffee mug Mr. Sugar Cube and I made to hold drinking straws for our coffee.

When we were planning to serve the cupcakes and coffee before the ceremony, we came up with re-purposing coffee bean bags and using a coffee mug to hold the half-and-half, sugar, and stir straws for what was going to be hot coffee. Now that the cupcakes and coffee will be served on the trolley following the ceremony, we’ve made the hot coffee cold brew and will have the 30-ish cups “just-add-ice” ready.

We still needed something to hold the drinking straws, though, as they aren’t individually wrapped and we didn’t want our grubby fingers all over them.

So we kept with the coffee mug idea. And we both had various ideas for the exact?coffee mug to use:

Kate Spade / Fringe Studio at?Nordstrom

Then Mr. Sugar Cube mentioned just making a cup with a “b” initial on it. Fitting, since we’re already using our first-name initials on the balloons that will be at both venues and the arrows that will guide our guests to their seats at the ceremony.

We decided on something a little more fun,白姐心水论坛, though…

…a nail-polished marbled coffee mug.

Supplies:

nail polish a container you don’t mind ruining (or a disposable metal tin) water your coffee mug scrapbook initial stickers (or you can paint on a design with Elmer’s glue) something to swirl the nail polish

Instructions:

Step 1: To begin, wash your dish and dry thoroughly.

Step 2: Then place the scrapbook sticker onto the dish. Depending on the dish and the stickers, the curves of the dish will cause some tearing. This is perfectly fine. Just make sure all the edges are firmly pressed onto the dish and not coming up before you dip it into the nail polish.

Step 3: When the mug/dish is ready, fill up your container with water.

Step 4: Then drop some nail polish straight from the bottle into the water. (Tip: Don’t use a nail polish that is quick drying so that the dish picks up all the polish.) We used three colors for our mug—two shades of red and white.

Step 5: Here is where you would use your wood skewer, toothpick, or plastic fork if you have neither a skewer or toothpick. Mr. Sugar Cube decided he liked the design that was made in the water as the nail polish fell into it, though, so we decided to forgo swirling. (Tip: Don’t forgo the swirling!)

Step 6: Once you’re happy with your design in the water, quickly roll your mug/dish along the design to pick it up onto the mug/dish. (Tip: You can also just dip your dish into the water and pick up the design so that the bottom quarter or half of the dish has the marbling.)

As you can kind of see in the last photo, the nail polish ended up in a big glob. Not very attractive. So we removed all the nail polish and started over, swirling the nail polish the second time around. This is why you should not skip the swirling.

Step 7: Once the nail polish is kind of dry, peel off the sticker.

Step 8: If you love the design, let it dry completely (I’d recommend 24 hours) and then spray it with a clear coating to make it safe for the dishwasher and microwave.

For us,在中国东海水晶城内, the initial didn’t really look like anything because the marbled design didn’t seem to be heavy where the holes of the “B” were. So I took sparkle paint and created a drop shadow.

Again, if you decide to add to the design after the nail polish is dry, wait an extended period of time and spray it with protective coating. (Tip: Spraying on a clear coat isn’t a necessary?step. If you choose not to, though, your mug/dish is not safe for the dishwasher or microwave. And I’d probably suggest not having nail polish touch anywhere you plan to touch with your mouth. Nail polish can have toxic chemicals, after all.)

And there you have it, your very own one-of-a-kind mug/dish!

Thankfully I bought a plastic container from Target for a few dollars since we had a lot of fun with this (minus dropping the red polish on the linoleum and having to use half a bottle of nail polish remover to clean it up) and will probably make more, maybe using some different stickers for stencils or painting designs in glue.
